I have a special spot for anything salmon in my heart. I love salmon as a color and I love salmon as a fish, especially when it’s sashimi. So when I heard about a restaurant named Salmon, I know I have to visit and eat there. I mean, surely with a name that just simply says “Salmon,” I would be satisfied with their salmon right? It was during my mother’s birthday celebration that I insisted to go to Exit 5, no matter how my family was complaining about how far it is. It’s not far really but the traffic in Riyadh these days makes it hard to travel in the Ring Roads from the city center. We were in King Fahd Road near Kingdom Tower and I was on my phone, when I looked up fifteen minutes later, we were still in the vicinity of the Kingdom Tower. Sheesh. Anyway, we finally reached Salmon Restaurant in Exit 5 in a stretch of a street that is dedicated to new and popular dining places. It’s one of the new foodie destinations in Riyadh.
We found Salmon Seafood Restaurant and entered the family section. It was a bit small but we easily found a table. My father had to sit in a chair that protrudes in the middle way (the only way) used by waiters to go back and forth the tables. It was really a bit narrow. The waiter promptly gave us our menu and we perused it eagerly. I was expecting everything to have salmon! Haha! Most of their dishes have salmon in it but there are some that didn’t and stood in its own like the steaks and ribs. I did forget that this is not exactly a restaurant meant for salmon alone, it’s a seafood restaurant. Anyway, here were the dishes we ordered and had:
I didn’t get the chance to taste the Lobster Soup so I can’t comment on it. My father said “okay”. Haha.
Shrimp Dynamite has seen a rise in popularity in most restaurants in the city. Every restaurant has their own take on it and Salmon’s Shrimp Dynamite can compete with the well-known ones. The shrimps are robust and drowning in its sauce; I must say that they’re really flavorful. Not spicy as I expected it to be (seriously, look at that orange sauce that’s on the border of becoming fiery red) but it still packs a punch; the sauce almost lickable (but I stopped myself swear!).
We were supposed to order a salmon maki roll but my brother cried overkill. Or something like that. He said we’re having salmon as a main course so might as well try something else for starters. Okay, okay! So that’s how we ended up with the Crazy Crab Roll. I guess what made this stick out from the rest is the crunchy crab that served as the topping. Otherwise, it’s your run in the mill crab maki roll that you can order from Japanese restaurants in the city. I’m also crazy about Japanese mayo and this one had it, although a bit subtle in flavor. Creamy though.
My parents did the whole “I don’t know what to order so let’s just order everything!” thing and ended up with the Sizzling Mix. It has grilled salmon, prawns, beef, and chicken partnered with potato wedges and steamed vegetables and basked in a sweet/savory barbecue sauce. What can I say? Give me grilled anything and put barbecue sauce in it and I’m sold! I just had gripes on the beef because it was a bit tough. Also, I know that I have no business eating my parents’ order but they shared! So who am I to refuse? Haha! This dish is good for sharing.
My mother also ordered pasta. (She always orders pasta because she wants to eat soft dishes.) Her fettuccine with cream sauce and grilled salmon is tasty. The sauce was a bit thin but it was alright.
So my order is naturally the specialty of the house: Grilled Salmon with lobster sauce that I partnered with mashed potato and mixed salad (wow salad!). You can choose among six carbs (plain white rice, Mexican rice, spicy garlic rice, garlic butter couscous, mashed potato, or French fries) and four sides (mixed veggies, spinach, garlic & mushroom, mixed salad, and beans and pea). And we all know that salmon is already good in its own but to enhance the flavor, there are sauces available: lobster sauce, creamy lemon caper, teriyaki sauce, special salmon sauce, dill sauce, lemon soy sauce, and honey balsamic sauce. I love the many options to mix and match the sides and the sauces. It did contribute to the taste and presentation of the salmon.
I love my moderately-sized grilled salmon; it was soft and juicy but I’m not sure what made it special, considering the restaurant is named after it. Well, the truth is, I’m not also sure what can take salmon to a higher level and whip it into something extraordinary. I’m pretty satisfied with Salmon Restaurant’s grilled salmon and I would have it again, in another sauce, next time.
My brother ordered the Oven-Baked Back Ribs. He really has a thing about not ordering all salmon in a Salmon restaurant, haha. So he decided to go against the tide and had the ribs instead. It was a good choice though. We like how tender it is and how drenched in barbecue sauce it is. It wasn’t fall off the bone though and the portion is a bit small considering the price.
Maybe because it’s named after one of the much-loved specie of fish, I’m expecting something more in Salmon’s salmon. I didn’t find anything super special but it doesn’t mean it’s not worth visiting or going back too. They have dishes that are delicious and memorable. So if you’re a huge salmon fan, try Salmon Restaurant!
Question, where is the salmon sashimi?! Haha. I kid.
