With Love From Amorino

With the number of gelato stores and kiosks in Riyadh, what can another gelato shop do to elevate the experience of eating Italy’s version of ice cream? Why, shape it like a flower on a cone! This is such a beautiful and genius idea that makes everyone want to click and post in Instagram excessively. Even if it means eating the ice cream a bit melted already. With the presence and opening (finally) of Amorino in Riyadh, our dream of floral dessert has just come true!

Amorino Gelato Al Naturale was founded in 2002 by two childhood friends Cristiano Sereni and Paolo Benassi in Ile St Louis, Paris. Benassi says that their objective is to make the highest quality gelato as naturally as possible with no artificial colors and flavorings. To do that, their gelato and sorbets are churned every day in typical Italian fashion under the watchful eyes of their chefs using the freshest free range organic eggs and highest grade whole milk. As you probably know by now, they offer the freshest, creamiest gelatos in guess how many flavors? Can we just say, A LOT?! And the great thing about their gelatos? You can order them in rose form in as many flavors as you want. And that translates to a few colors too, depending on what you want to eat at the very moment.

Amorino in Riyadh opened in what is called the Fiorenza La Piazza in Takhasussi Street, the newest hang-out place of Riyadhizens once every restaurant there opens (can’t wait!). When R and I were invited to come and visit it, there was a line at the gelato counter and everyone was giddy with excitement. Must come with the choosing of flavors. Everyone were like kids (esp. the adults haha) unable to choose immediately that’s why there was a bit of a wait but it’s all worth it when everyone gets their most-coveted rose ice cream. It was Reina who picked our cones and she said she became indecisive and just told them to cram in as many flavors as they can in her large cone. Haha!

Pretty sure there’s chocolate, pistachio, vanilla, mango, lemon sherbet, and raspberry in this frozen flower

To come up with a colorful one, order mango, strawberry and chocolate

The gelato are decadent. Every flavor has its own texture. The mango flavor is a bit sour and almost pulpy in texture but they’re suited for fruit lovers who don’t want to indulge in the usual vanilla, chocolate, and coffee flavors. Some of their fruit flavors are too sour for R though. Couldn’t get past the first bite on the lemon sorbet. The usual flavors are good though and will satisfy anyone’s sweet tooth and gelato cravings.

The Americano

The Americano in our table at the Family section

Amorino doesn’t only offer gelato. They also have coffee, coffee blends, waffles, and crepes. If you want a cup of joe that is has a strong, bold, and deep flavor, you can’t go wrong with their Americano. It’s black and on point. It doesn’t meddle your tongue with complicated flavors. It’s intense and authentic. Period. It also comes with a wafer roll that at first I thought was a packet of hardened sugar. Woe me, I crushed the wafer before my logic took hold of my brain and hand.

Frappe for those who drink their coffee cold and sweet.

The Espresso Frappe is another intense drink with flavor that is sweet yet bold. It’s not the usual frappe that can be bought in coffeeshops in Riyadh because this one is creamy yet it has a strong note from the espresso. This drink is for the serious coffee lover that wants to venture away from their hot espresso drink for a while.

Ready to devour this yumminess

There’s a secret to their waffle that we’d like to know. We love the batter that they use for it because it’s mildly sweet and doesn’t overcome our senses with fluffiness. It’s a bit thin and more crunchy than soft but once we started eating, we couldn’t stop. Every square of that was good; wish we didn’t have them fill with caramel sauce though. Haha! Overall, it was great on its own with probably a scoop of just one gelato. You can choose to have it with jam, chantilly cream, sugar or chocolate. Yummy!

Oozing with jam

So overwhelmed with chocolate  and caramel from our gelato roses and waffle, we opted to have a simple Crepe with Strawberry Jam. I think this is the dessert I enjoyed the most because like the waffle, the crepe has a batter that’s mildly sweet and I can’t get enough of. I probably enjoyed the crepe even without the strawberry jam. However I enjoyed the jam too. I can really taste how luxurious and good quality the jam is.

Overall, we enjoyed our “taste test” in Amorino. The great thing about Amorino, as explained by their regional manager, is that you’ll taste the same product in wherever branch you visit. Be it in Germany or France o Spain or Morocco, every Amorino branch dish out gelatos that are made from the same ingredients. Wow! Awesomesauce! We’re very fond of the gelato roses. It’s such a simple yet fabulous idea! Who would have thought right? You can replace your real roses now that there’s gelato roses. I’m sure girls can appreciate that more. Haha! If you want to take home their gelato, they have insulated boxes that makes “take out” a treat. Your ice cream won’t melt easily (even if you’ll encounter traffic snarls in Riyadh). What you will probably think of is the distance of this place to your house or workplace. Would you be willing to venture out this far for some gelato? Only you can answer that so we suggest you go once and take it from there.
