Eeny Meenie Tiny Ipsy

A few months ago, I wrote about beauty subscription box Glambox and how disappointing it was. Imagine paying SR 90 for 4-5 samples? Whyyy? I don’t know what I was thinking then. So it’s a good thing that I only signed up for three months then kalas! I won’t make the same mistake again, unless they come up with products that are worth my hard-earned bucks. I decided to look for another beauty subscription box (hindi na natuto haha!) while I still have a box coming from Glambox so I can compare. I thought of Ipsy and I’m amazed at how affordable their box is. Only $10 a month! Around SAR 40. Now that’s something I’m willing to pay for samples. And the good thing is, I can cancel anytime and not be burdened by subscription plans. The only thing I don’t like about Ipsy is they don’t deliver to Saudi Arabia and I have to use Shop and Ship to deliver the glam bag to me. Anyway, we’ll settle the shipping fee score later. Let’s talk about Ipsy first.

Ipsy is created by Youtube makeup guru Michelle Phan (if you don’t know her then you will probably not enjoy Ipsy so move along people… haha!). The aim of Ipsy is to solve the question, “What are the right products for me?” There are so many beauty products nowadays it’s so confusing which ones to buy! It’s especially hard when you don’t know if a product will work for you before buying. If it doesn’t, then sorry to our wasted fulos. Choosing the best beauty stuff for us is a challenge! That is why Ipsy was born. Ipsy contains deluxe samples and full-sized beauty products that we can try! And only for $10 a month!

The good thing about Ipsy is they customize each glam bag per subscriber. They take time to get to know a customer by letting us take a quiz to determine what our features are, what products interest us and what colors will suit us better. They try as possible to match products to our liking. There’s a waiting list when you subscribe. It’s possible that they have too many subscribers and limited products but I think they’re just trying to promote their social media accounts because they let you like and follow so that you have a bigger chance of becoming a member after you do these options. Gotta love their marketing ploys. Each month, they have a theme and that’s what I’m really excited about. Each glam bag is well-thought of.

So I signed up and I used the US address that Shop and Ship gave me. They sent my September Ipsy glam bag on September 18 and on the same day, SnS received it in the New York address. SnS shipped it to me two days after. It’s fast! I’m so excited to receive my first Ipsy glam bag. It has this chromatic pink package and inside is this golden peach kit. I love this because the kits the products came with are re-usable. Instant kikay kit!

How shiny pink is this packet?

So glad they come in a small pouch!

The September glam bag’s theme is Face Fashion. Inside it are the following:

Contents, contents!

Contents, contents!

TRESemme Perfectly (un)Done Sea Foam. This product creates air-light waves that are soft and full of body. It adds bounce and shine to the hair. I’m a bit disappointed because I couldn’t use this product effectively. My hair is straight and it doesn’t need natural waves for now. Haha! But I like that it’s almost full-size.

Temptu S/B Highlighter in Champagne Shimmer. This silicone-based highlighter brings a natural radiance to the face. It goes on sheer but can be layered for a more intense look. It’s long-lasting and can be worn all day. I LOVE THIS PRODUCT! This is my favorite of the bunch. At first I was weary to wear this because it looked runny, too bronzy, and shimmery but its luminous finish is really lovely. If it’s available here in Riyadh, I will buy the full size!

Glamglow Flashmud Brightening Treatment. This product promises a sexy brighter skin with its built-in pre-exfoliator particles. I’ve always been curious about Glamglow because it receives lots of praises and raves. It’s one of the best facials in the world so I’m extremely pleased to see their flashmud treatment in my glam bag. I like how easy it is to apply on the face and it doesn’t hurt. The particles are gentle on the skin and there’s an instant smoothness after washing the face. Thumbs up!

City Color City Chic Lipstick. This lipstick is known for its intense, bold pigmentation. They’re buttery when applied and ultra creamy on the lips. I had trouble with the color they sent me because it’s a bit bold for what I want. I’m pretty sure my answer on their Beauty Quiz pointed to a love for nudes and neutrals. Anyway, I didn’t find anything special with this lipstick.
Formula X Nail Color in Ignite. This is one product I won’t mind receiving in a sample bottle. It’s easier to empty out and look oh so cute! I liked the intensity and shine of this nail polish. The color is smoking red-hot and sexyyy. The nail polish promises exxtraordinary color, xceptional performance, and xtra long-lasting shine (so yeah, that’s why it’s called Formula X). I’m not sure if this one is truly extraordinary but I like how easy it is to apply. Formula X is also available in Sephora now.
All these for $10! RIGHT?! This glam bag is worth it when it comes to price. Only if it’s that simple. It’s obvious that I like Ipsy and its contents but let’s go to the cons because surely, it can’t be that perfect. And it isn’t. First of all, how sure are we that the products that are coming up in the glam bags are available in Saudi Arabia? Case in point: Temptu and City Color Cosmetics. They’re not available in beauty counters and  pharmacies in the Kingdom. So how do we get them if we loved them? Uhuh. Secondly, the shipping fee. Shipping within the United States is included in the $10 already but what about the shipping fee from the States to the Kingdom? The shipping fee I paid for SnS to get this glam bag to me? SR 64. That means, the total of subscribing to Ipsy for Saudi residents is SR 101.5. This created a huge dent in my wallet and this is why I had to cancel my subscription to Ipsy even if I love it. SR 100 can already get me a full-size Mac lipstick or a bottle of foundation amd a blush from Maybelline or a whole makeup kit from Essence… Lastly, what if you don’t like the products in your kit? It’s too expensive to take this risk.
Glam Box vs. Ipsy

Glam Box vs. Ipsy?Nahhh.

At the end of the day, if you’re in Saudi Arabia, Ipsy is not worth its shipping price. Unless you find a way to make that cheaper (like if you have friends in the US who will gladly send them to you here for free) then by all means, subscribe!
