Friday Finds: Minimalist Muji

Here’s a crazy story: I like my layovers at the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) because of its shopping opportunities it presents to me. So one time, I was there at the HKIA looking at their map and one store caught my eye: MUJI. Muji is this brand that emphasizes on the intrinsic appeal of an object than the frills and fancies that come with it. Their products of home and lifestyle range are of the Japanese aesthetic of “su” meaning plain or unadorned. Muji promotes simplicity without compromising quality, appeal, and luxury. It’s also one brand that I have always wanted to waste my time on so I went searching for it in the HKIA and those who had layovers in this airport know how huge this airport is. I went from the Departure to the Arrival area looking for Muji. It was an instant workout even with the walkalators but I still couldn’t find it. Only to realize that it’s outside at the Departure area and I cannot enter it. WTH right?! You know what’s crazier? There are Muji stores in the Philippines and I didn’t go there during my vacation! Pinahirapan ko talaga sarili ko! Haha!

Muji is now open in Hayat Mall!

Thankfully, I don’t have to look far and wide for Muji because their first shop in Saudi Arabia has opened in Riyadh. YES! It’s right in Gate 4 of Hayat Mall in King Abdulaziz Road! It has been a long time coming. I’ve seen their sign in that mall for quite a while and I’ve been madly waiting for it to open because I already want to look for organizational shelves and stationeries. And I wasn’t disappointed.

Here are my Friday Finds from Muji:

1. Aroma Diffuser and Oils

It’s the first thing that caught my attention. It looks so simple yet this diffuser uses ultrasonic waves to create a mist that effectively spreads scent throughout a room. It has also a functioning LED light that can serve as lamp for the room. Along with this diffuser of two sizes are the various oils in different aroma. SR 299 for the small diffuser.

2. Pens and Notebooks

This is what I'm here for.

I went to the stationery area immediately because I saw their colorful pens and neutral notebooks; these are the main reasons why I went to Muji. They have a lot of selections when it comes to their pens: ball pens, gel ink pens, pencils, colored pens, and highlighters… I wished I could get one of each! Their notepads and notebooks go for SR 10 up depending on the size (from B6 to A4). They have light brown covers that looks boring but it actually appeals to my minimalist sense. They also appeal to our love for the earth as most of their notebooks are made from environmentally friendly recycled paper.

3. Storage Solutions

It's your time to organize your stuff!

It’s your time to organize your stuff!

Muji offers practical solutions that saves space! They have stackable polypropylene drawers, acrylic desk tidies, and plastic containers!¬†Acrylic cases, shelves, and containers are all the rave these days because their transparency can help you locate your stuff immediately and can help display your items prominently. They make any vanity table or dresser look so elegant and sophisticated. Muji has different kinds and they have my all-time favorite makeup holders. However, they’re a bit expensive. I’m pretty sure I can get the same kind at any riyalin store. But of course, the quality that Muji products has is higher than those available in riyalin stores. If I have the money to spend, I will definitely get these acrylic cases at Muji. The plastic cases are a bit cheaper at around SR 50 up, depending on the kind and size. This is one of my first buys. I bought one of their rectangular cases that I’m now using for my foundation bottle and tubes.

4. Beauty Essentials

I can't choose just one.

Muji has a great selection of beauty and makeup essentials. They have makeup brushes and sponges, combs, mirrors, cotton and tissue sheets, smaller bottles where you can transfer your liquids on, etc. Their items are good for travel. They also have cosmetic cases and bath & shower essentials. They have these cute porcelain toothbrush stand that I was eyeing curiously at first (what is this for?! haha). Most of their home accessories are meant for a bright, clean interiors and they easily blend no matter what your designs are in your houses.

Travel companions.

Muji has a line for travel and it’s called Muji To Go. These products are designed to be travel companions that enables you to see and experience more of your trips. These items are so practical and no-nonsense: cabin luggage, neck pillows, packing cases, toiletry holders, wash bags, etc.¬†They come in really neutral and basic colors like grey, navy blue, black, and red. I got one of their medium-sized garment cases in black and it helped me pack for my trip to Bahrain.¬†My clothes weren’t all over my luggage. They’re fit and snug in my nylon gusset case.

6. Clothes

Clothes are at the back of the store near the cashier. Muji’s fashion aesthetics doesn’t appeal to every one but they sure appeal to me. I like how high quality, practical and classically stylish their dresses, polos, and cardigans are. I’m in love with their denim dresses which retail for SR 250+ (obviously that price took me aback haha) and their cardigan that¬†transforms into a shawl, a vest, a blouse, etc. It has multi-functions which makes it a great addition to any wardrobe.

I missed a lot of other items Muji offers but that’s all the more reason you should visit the store. You might just find what you are looking for.
