Beauty Bets: Faves and Fails (September 2017)

Remember the last time I updated you guys of my Faves and Fails in my skincare and beauty arsenal? No? Me neither, haha. It’s been such a long time! When we started our plan to move flats last August, I lost sight of all my skincare and beauty products because some of them were already transferred to the new flat and some were left behind. I had a hard time keeping up with my routines that’s why I didn’t have the time to use and review as many products as I wanted to. We’ve already moved and now that I can see all of my things in one place again, I can resume using my staples and some new ones I acquired through an event. I can finally write something for this series! Yay! Haha! So here goes the products that I have been loving and not-so-liking for the month of September (and a week into October)! These are a mix of products that are available in the Philippines (my home country), online, or in pharmacies and stores here in Riyadh.

FAVES:

1. RA & Gowoori Green Tea Foam Wash

What: A Korean foam facial wash best known for removing makeup and sebum from the surface of the skin and deep cleaning of pores.
Price: PHP 190 (approx. SR 11)
Where To Buy: Saeli Yuri Melissa Lee All About Korean Cosmetics and Skin Care (FB group)

My ultimate favorite facial wash is still the Eskinol Oil Control Pimple Fighting Facial Wash but sometimes, I use other facial wash especially at night and during those times when my skin is not flaring up with pimples here and there. I joined a Facebook group that focuses on Korean skincare and cosmetics when I was into my 10-step Korean skincare routine. I was confused at what’s happening at the Saeli Yuri Melissa Lee group at first because there was so much updates and conversations going on but I finally caught up and won in one of their “suji” sales. I got a bundle of Korean products that I have no idea what are used for. I ended up having my cousin bring it to me here in Riyadh. One of the products in the bundle is a Green Tea Facial Wash from the Korean brand RA & Gowoori. I began using the facial wash during my night time routine and I must say I enjoy the subtle fragrance of this one. It’s also very gentle in the skin. True to its main ingredient, green tea, this facial wash is calming my skin flare ups and relaxes me. I haven’t seen a drastic improvement but there’s no negative effect on my skin so this is an A for me.

2. GlamGlow DreamDuo Overnight Transforming Treatment

What: A moisturizing serum and seal dream team overnight treatment for visibly plumper, more hydrated skin that lets you to wake up to a soft, smooth complexion.
Price: SR 245
Where To Buy: Sephora branches, sephora.sa

For the entire August, I wasn’t following any skincare routine for my face because I was too busy and too tired to care, haha. I stopped my experiment on the 10-step Korean skincare a few months back because it was just too much (and too long). When we finally moved, I promised myself I’m going to pick up where I left off but obviously, that didn’t happen. Good thing, I attended a Sephora event a few weeks ago and was given the GlamGlow DreamDuo Overnight Transforming Treatment, one of the newer products of GlamGlow known for their volcanic masks. This is a helluva expensive product though at SR 245 for only 40 ml worth of moisturizer. However, it works! The DreamDuo is composed of two products: the DreamSerum and the DreamSeal. The first one infuses anti-aging antioxidants into the skin while the latter moistruizes, plumps, and recharges the skin. I have no idea if they do all those. All I know is it worked for my oily skin. My face looked refreshed after a month of not being fed its nutrients. The best transformation though was my husband’s skin. I only persuaded him to try this once and the following day, his skin looked better! WUT. Well, considering the price, it better works!

3. Jeffree Star Velour Lip Scrub

What: Sugar based lip scrub to prep your lips before applying any liquid lipstick
Price: USD 12 (via website; no shipping fee yet) / SR 80 (via pre-order)
Where To Buy: jeffreestarcosmetics.com / Irene’s Closet Riyadh Saudi Arabia

I was on a “watermelon everything” phase a few months ago. I loved drinking cold watermelon juice, love smelling the Watermelon Lemonade room spray of Bath & Body Works, and love using skincare that has watermelon in it. Obsessed, I tell you! Haha! I decided to pre-order the Jeffree Star Lip Scrub in Watermelon Gum through Irene’s CLoset because every time I see Jeffree use it in his channel, I’m so smitten. I have to have it! A few weeks after, my order arrived and I used it immediately! OMG, super yummy! I mean, I don’t like eating the sugar in this scrub of course but sometimes, the sugar gets pushed back into my lips into my mouth and I get to taste it. Indeed, it’s sweet! Haha! The smell of refreshingly sweet watermelon is so strong and I enjoy using it. It’s a dry scrub so it really removes and buffs the lips; just don’t rub it too much! The best thing about this Velour Lip Scrub is it’s vegan, 100% cruelty-free and paraben- and gluten-free. There’s also so much product in a jar I won’t probably be needing a new lip scrub for a year or so.

IN-BETWEEN

1. Makeup Revolution Flawless Matte Ultra Eyeshadows

What: Makeup Revolution’s Flawless Matte Ultra 32 Eye Shadow Palette contains 32 shades from Makeup Revolution’s ultra matte formulation! Held in a sophisticated black palette containing a large full sized mirror.
Price: SR 99
Where To Buy: Whites Pharmacy

Imagine my surprise when I saw a shelf of Makeup Revolution in Whites Pharmacy (in Panda Hypermarket near King Faisal Hospital in Takhasussi). Whites Pharmacy is really upping their new brands game. After Wet N Wild and Physician’s Formula, here comes Makeup Revolution, one of the most talked-about brand by beauty Youtubers. The makeup brand is known for dishing the best dupes of high-end makeup especially their eyeshadow palettes. I picked up the Flawless Ultra Eyeshadow Palette because of Laura Lee’s recommendation. She said it’s a good dupe for a Smashbox Eyeshadow Palette. When I first used the palette, I was happy to find a full-size mirror inside and 32 nude and natural day and night shades! I like the amount of product in each pan; not too much and not too little. Something I can probably hit pan soon and very handy to bring.

But I find the colors to be so similar to each other that when I put it in my lids, I didn’t know which one is which already. One vertical line is too much similar in hue. Some of them appeared to be chalky, some smooth and buttery. So it’s a so-so palette for me. An in-between fave and fail. Just okay.

FAILS:

1. Miniso Cushion BB Cream

What: Enriched with moisturizing botanic essence. Nondrying and long-lasting formula. Blemishes and flaws are concealed and pores appear minimized. Provides high coverage for a flawless finish.
Price: SR 25
Where To Buy: Miniso Riyadh

Miniso is already in Riyadh! The much-loved Japanese store that literally sprung like mushrooms in Metro Manila in the Philippines has opened a branch in Exit 15, after Othaim Mall Rabwa. We love these budget stores because they have products as low as SR 5 and SR 9. I saw that they have new stocks on their makeup and skincare lines when we went there the second time around. They have a cushion BB cream that promises to be lightweight and long-lastin so I got one and tried it. Here’s the thing with cushion makeup and me: we don’t go well together. Primarily because of my skin tone. It never suits my medium skin tone. Anyway, I picked up the “Natural” shade, the darker of the two that is available in Miniso. I tried it the following day for office makeup but one swipe and I know: it’s a fail.

Is that chalky or what?!

The product was streaky and it looked like white powder in cream form. When it dried down, it looked like I had too much powder in my face. I couldn’t blend it in and it’s so hard to make this flawless and smooth-looking. Arrggggh. Maybe if you’re fairer in skin tone, this will look ok on you. Hopefully, their other cushion makeup works better.

See you on the next Faves, In-Betweens, and Fails series. Share with me what your ultimate skincare and beauty finds in Riyadh are next!
