Beauty Bets: Faves and Fails (February 2018)

Wow, when did it become March so suddenly? The first quarter of 2018 is almost over, folks! I’m back again with another Beauty Faves and Fails and I know I’m not consistently writing this monthly. But we’re also getting busier and we’re thankful for the opportunities that come our way. Anyway, the winter months have left my skin a bit dry but my T-zone is as oily as ever. I don’t change my skincare products to accommodate the shift of weather but I add some products to address the problems that I see. Do you have a winter skincare routine? A summer one? Sound off in our comment section down below!

For now, here are my favorites and not-so-favorites for the month of February.

FAVES:

1. Urban Decay Naked Smoky Eyeshadow Palette

Gorgeous packaging!

What: Naked Smoky—loaded with ALL the essentials you need for the perfect neutral smoky eye. A true range of shades. The perfect brushes. And detailed tutorials.
Price: SR 267
Where To Buy: sephora.sa

The perfect palette for smoky eye looks.

To date, I have two Urban Decay Naked Eyeshadow Palettes. The 2 and 3. When the Sephora Sale came up on the fourth quarter of 2017, I know I had to score some famous eyeshadows that were rumored to go on sale.  And so  I got the Urban Decay Naked Smoky Palette which was sold on sale at only SR 100. More than 50% discount from its regular price! And like the Naked palettes that I have, this didn’t disappoint. I only really got to use this this February and I’m so amazed how easy it is to do a smoky eye look with this palette. I used to look like a raccoon when I do a smoky look manually with dark eyeshadows that I pick out from my collection. They don’t blend together as seamlessly as the eyeshadows in the Naked Smoky do. This palette includes warm bronzes, dimensional grays, rich browns, gorgeous taupes and deep black… everything needed for a great eye look that gives a #girlboss vibe. I love that they come in different textures too: satins, mattes, and sparkly.

2. Inglot AMC Eyeliner Gel

It’s a bold color but it’s worth wearing, even at work. Best used with Inglot’s eyeliner gel brush.

What: High intensity pigments provide ideal coverage and rich colours after just one application. The creamy and delicate long lasting formula dries to a longlasting, smudge proof, and crease proof finish.
Price: SR 99
Where To Buy: Inglot branches (Riyadh Galley, Riyadh Avenue Mall, Granada Mall, etc.)

I’m not good at swatching, haha.

It’s not only me who loves the black AMC Eyeliner Gel of Inglot. I’ve read rave reviews on this product making it one of Inglot’s best-sellers. But, I discovered that I love the colored versions more. I was given the blue green eyeliner gel (66) during an event for 6thStreet.com two months ago. At first, I was scared in using this colored gel because it might not be appropriate for work. But it wasn’t the case. The blue green color was so pigmented but not too bright. It was an elegant, sophisticated color that doesn’t scream “papansin” in any way. The creamy gel glided on smoothly; it was one of the easiest eyeliner to use! I used it with Inglot’s eyeliner brush but you can use any pointed brush and you can control how thick or thin you want it to be. It doesn’t smudge and doesn’t crease. Over a few hours, the color fades a bit but nothing to worry about. I didn’t even need a retouch. Now I’m feeling brave to get the violet (64) and red (79) eyeliner gels!

3. Miniso 3-Way Eyebrow Pencil

1 stick, 3 parts.

What: A pencil integrated with brush, pencil, and powder. Unique natural wax formula, with subtle color pigments, creates hair-like fine lines. Bring you a new experience of shaping your brow.
Price: SR 9
Where To Buy: Miniso branches in Haram Mall, Khurais Mall, and Eastern Ring Road (near Othaim Mall Rabwa)

Kilay is life! Yes, indeed! And if you’re on the look out for a really affordable eyebrow pencil, this is for you. It comes with a pencil, powder and spoolie for only a few riyals. Like I said in previous Beauty Bets entries, I don’t really have much of a problem when it comes to my eyebrows. They’re thick and I only go for threading or waxing once a month to clean and retouch. I only need a few swipes of eyebrow pencil or a few fill ins from eyebrow gels and I’m done. This product from Miniso has a pencil that can help create precise strokes. The powder helps in buffing out the strokes and making the brows thicker. The spoolie keeps everything in place. For a 3-in-1 product, this is amazing. I’m not sure if they have other colors now but when I got it, they only have 02 which is brown. 01 is a slate gray I think.

4. Erborian CC Creme Clair

The color of the CC creme shifts to suit your skin tone.

What: CC Creme Clair is a multi-purpose formula: this “High Definition” illuminator, with its fine texture for light to medium skin tones, contains encapsulated pigments to enhance your skin’s beauty.
Price: Approx. SR 200
Where To Buy: Sephora.ae

This is one of the best products I’ve ever used. But first, Erborian is a Korean brand, inspired by tradition and modernity which live together in a dynamic harmony. Their best-selling product is the BB Creme but they also have the CC Creme which was given to me by Sephora during their Fall Collection Launch. This CC Creme Clair is truly an “intelligent” formula. It’s white out of the bottle but upon application on the skin, it adapts to my skin tone (it turns light brown seriously) and makes my complexion even and more beautiful (naks). It’s truly a breathtaking product; every time I use it I’m surprised. Unfortunately it’s not yet available in Sephora KSA but Sephora UAE carries some of Erborian’s products.

5. FOREO Luna Play

Small but big on cleansing.

What: Fun, affordable, and the perfect introduction to the amazing skincare benefits that come from T-Sonic™ cleansing, LUNA play proves that great things come in cute packages!
Price: SR 180
Where To Buy: Whites Pharmacy

This was in my Christmas wish list last December and Reina gave it to me as a gift, yay! I’m so excited to try the Foreo Luna when Youtubers raved about it a few years ago but it was expensive and I couldn’t afford it that time. It’s great that they came up with the Luna Play because this is cheaper. I had doubts in buying it though because it’s not rechargeable and not battery-operated too: after 100 uses, I have to dispose this. The Luna Play comes in a very compact design. It’s like a toy that comes in cute colors like aquamarine, fuchsia, mint, purple and sunflower yellow. I have the pearl pink. It has a 2-zone facial brush that features finer touch-points to cleanse sensitive/normal skin on larger areas like the cheeks and forehead, while thicker touch points provide a deep and precise cleansing on areas like the T-zone. It gently and throughly gives the skin a sonic cleanse. At first I was hesitant to believe that it can clean my skin but I can say that a few days of using this in the morning created a difference. There’s a certain glow and my pores aren’t that clogged anymore. This is also perfect for traveling!

FAILS:

Sorry, you two. You failed me.

1. Essence Stay All Day Long Lasting Concealer

Nope, didn’t work for me. Too drying and creases!

What: Put an end to tired eyes! The long-lasting concealer with light-reflecting pigments is a true magician that makes dark circles under your eyes as well as redness and shadows disappear to give you a fresh, radiant look! Thanks to the creamy, soft texture, it is easy to apply evenly – giving you a smooth complexion that lasts for up to 16 hours.
Price: SR 15
Where To Buy: Whites Pharmacy

I went to Whites Pharmacy in search of Essence Camouflage Concealer which was said to be good for an eyeshadow base. But it was not available so I settled for the Stay All Day 16-H Long Lasting Concealer because it was cheap (only SR 15) and looked like Colourpop’s No Filter Concealer. It wasn’t anywhere near it. This concealer was a bit dry and creased after a while. It was hard to blend and doesn’t even have decent coverage. My eye bags were peeking through! I got a lighter shade because reviews said this is great for highlighting but because the consistency and texture is a bit thick and creamy, it wasn’t a dream to blend this and was really streaky. It worked a bit for spot concealing but overall, I have no use for this and I wished I didn’t buy this impulsively.

2. Queen Helene Mint Julep Face Scrub

Gentle granules but this broke me out!

What: This deep cleaning facial scrub deeply cleans and helps unclog pores and draw out impurities, while hydrating Glycerin helps maintain skin moisture balance. After use, skin is clean with a fresher-looking complexion.
Price: SR 13.33
Where To Buy: iHerb

Ever since I used up my Human Nature Strawberry Face Scrub, I haven’t found a nice replacement here in Riyadh. I tried a facial scrub from Boots but I’m not sure if I got a bad bath because the facial scrub I got had a funky smell that I threw it after two uses. I decided to turn to the ever dependable iHerb and purchased the Queen Helene Mint Julep Facial Scrub. I liked the mask version of this so I figured this will be good for my skin too. It promised to deep clean my skin and gently exfoliate it to draw out impurities and unclog pores. On my first few tries, it broke me out! It’s a product that should have prevented acne but it gave me pimples (one of which was so huge). Enough said, this is not a product for me.

I made the list a bit longer this time because I haven’t written a Faves and Fails for quite a while. I actually have more but I don’t want to make this a novel. Haha! Tell me if you discovered something new and effective for the past few months!
