The weather is changing gears fast and before summer pounces on us, there are a few days left of spring for us to enjoy the healthy bloom of the city flora. After all, the name ‘Riyadh’ is derived from the word ‘rawdah’ which means garden — a little bit ironic since we hardly see any bushes of flowers out in the road.
But not to fret, there are still a lot of flowers to see and they can all be found in the flower shops! Cared for in proper, cooled areas where their beauty can survive. I visited our local flower shop the other day and drew inspiration from it by simply declaring my own Top 5 Flowers for Spring. Nothing scientific, just based on pure prettiness and symbolism. Maybe you’ll see something you like:
1. Tulips
Tulips are perfect spring flowers and is an eloquent symbol and elegance and grace. I am always amazed at seeing tulips here in Riyadh because knowing that they need particular cool areas to survive, it is truly a delight taking one home and decorating my room with it.
2. Gerbera Daisies
These flowers are striking, bright and outwardly cheerful in appearance. It is the 5th most popular flower in the world and it’s bloom also symbolizes spring time. They come in vivid colors like orange, red, pink and yellow. Perfect for a vibrant friend of yours!
3. Ranunculus
Its name is a weird assignment to an otherwise lovely bulb of a flower. Although it is also known as “Buttercup” or “Coyote Eyes” in other flower shops. I am a big fan of these species and would dream of using them on my special day (when it comes, LOL). They look delicate and charming and their pastel shades make for a sweet arrangement.
4. Casablanca Lily
For the clean and classic spring decor, I would think this would make as a great centerpiece for outdoor picnics by the porch and simply standing on your desk by the window on a fine Saturday weekend. This particular flower is a symbol of celebration and is great for special occasions.
5. Miniature/Petite Roses
Of course, roses are a classic! But in the recent years, the popularity of miniature roses has risen with gardeners around the world. They provide variation from the regular roses and also comes in uncommon colors like this pink and white combination. They are dainty and a little offbeat at the same time.
I love flowers. I think they are one of the last things that technology can’t replace in our lifetime. Even though they will eventually wilt out in time, it’s the act of going out there and choosing which ones matches the personality of the person we’re giving it to and the occasion on why we are giving it can show how much a person knows you and makes you happy. It’s the care and thought behind it that matters most. If you agree with me, then what are you waiting for? Get your special someone a blooming bouquet! 🙂
