A month ago, we were hearing from the Riyadh grapevine that Buffalo’s Cafe and Restaurant in Tahlia Street is closing. That got us worried because Buffalo’s is one of our favorite restaurants in the city. We had countless celebrations there with friends (and a number of Big Round Up orders, a favorite!). We also had a memorable time at Buffalo’s in 2011 when we first had a fill of their Breakfast/Brunch menu. Buffalo’s was one of the first, if not the first, restaurant in Riyadh to open their restaurant at 6:00 in the morning and introduce breakfast food to us Riyadhizens. There were fewer morning persons who eat out as early as 6:00 AM in 2011 but now, the brunch culture in Riyadh is awake, alive, and kicking! And Buffalo’s is a pioneer of it and they even leveled up their breakfast game by offering breakfast all day long! Yes folks, pancakes for lunch? Why not! Omelettes for dinner? Sure do! Breakfast all day every day? Yes! Because Buffalo’s is not closing; it’s here to stay.
Buffalo’s Cafe and Restaurant first opened its doors in 1985 in Roswell, Georgia. They’re known for their world-famous buffalo-style chicken wings and sauces served in a family-friendly environment. Buffalo’s in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia opened on April 18, 2010. This actually came as a surprise to me because I thought Buffalo’s has always been here you know? Long before I even arrived in 2008. It has that familiar vibe of a friendly, dependable neighborhood restaurant. Buffalo’s introduced their breakfast menu five years ago and we were probably the first bloggers who wrote about them. I was just one happy early-riser knowing that I already had an option then to eat delicious breakfast at a pretty affordable price. I fondly remember their Buffalo Passport, a dish with two beef bacon strips, two beef sausages served with a hashbrown, two eggs and a choice between three mini buttermilk pancakes or toast, that is worth SR 19. With SR 19, my tummy was filled and I can go on a day’s worth of errands.
Buffalo’s breakfast menu is the brainchild of Mr. Nabil Dirani, Chief Operations Officer of Al Muktan Foods, franchiser of Buffalo’s and Fatburger in Saudi Arabia. He came up with the concept of serving beautiful and delicious dishes that are enough reason to wake up early every day! With the highest standards in mind, the breakfast dishes are served in huge quantity perfect for sharing and perfect for those who have a lot of tasks in their to-do list for the day. Their breakfast menu proved to be successful that they extended the time of its serving: every day from morning to midnight! Buffalo’s has truly become the breakfast oasis in the busy, bustling street of Tahlia.
We were invited to try their more extensive breakfast menu and seriously, as fans of their breakfast food (especially their pancakes!), who are we to decline? We were there on a sunny Saturday afternoon to eat breakfast as an afternoon snack? Haha! With our table overflowing with food, I think it’s but proper to say that we ate for lunch, snack, and dinner! Here are some of our favorites:
Buffalo’s Pancakes has always been one of my favorites in Riyadh. No pancake in Riyadh has ever come close to its taste and softness and fluffiness… and even for its huge serving! Ever since I had Buffalo’s pancakes five years ago, it has been my benchmark in comparing pancakes in Riyadh. So far, they remain top on my list. There’s just something in their 100% made from scratch batter that makes their pancakes taste light, a bit salty and sweet at the same time, but 2-3 pieces are enough to fill one’s cravings. Very affordable too. They served us the mini pancakes above so that we can try all flavors.
I zeroed in on their Original Pancakes, just the simple stack of four pancakes with butter and maple syrup and also the pancakes with fruits. It’s a no-fuss breakfast staple that’s also available as add-on for the main breakfast courses. I fell totally in love with the Banana Nut Pancakes with banana slices and chopped walnuts and topped with whipped cream. It’s a boost of the classic.
And also the Warm Cherry Pancakes drizzled with cherry jam complete with preserved cherries. Other fruit flavors include Blueberries, Cinnamon Apple and Coconut. If you’re not into fruits then try their Chocolate Chip Pancakes.
Of course, Buffalo’s breakfast is not just known for its pancakes but also for its variety of breakfast faves. Their Waffles are made of the same batter but crunchier. I like the difference in texture in every bite. It’s typically served with just maple syrup and butter but you can add any flavor you want like walnut, pineapple, cinnamon apple, blueberry, cherry, etc. We had the ones with banana and strawberries.
Another filling options are their Crepes and French Toast. The crepe can go two ways: savory or sweet. They have it in the usual fruit flavors but they also have it stuffed with bacon and cheddar or chicken strips or spinach and cheese or beef sausages. Really, the choices are endless! Their French Toast, made with soft toast topped with powdered sugar, comes with fruits, cinnamon raisin, or banana caramel. But why settle for this when you can have the Supreme French Toast! We had it and we gawked for a few minutes at the behemoth slices of vanilla battered french toast topped with sweet cream and slices of bananas and strawberries. This makes for an Instagram-worthy photo!
Make sure to also try their omelets. Reina was so awed with the way they cook their omelets because they look huge and fluffy. One serving is good for one to two persons! They’re filled with various meats and cheese and veggies and you can choose from their signature ones like All Steak, Big Bacon, Chicken Fajita, Spanish, Garden, Sausage, and Supreme Cheese.
We had their Mushroom Omelet and Chili Beef Omelet. If you want mellow flavors, then go for the Mushroom. If you want a spicy kick and a strong beefy flavor then go for the Chili. They’re really filling and we couldn’t finish one order in one sitting.
It was my first time to try their Biscuit and Gravy with Eggs dish and I kept wondering why I haven’t tried it when it’s just so good? Cutting back from the sweetness of the other dishes in our table, this dish hits my tastebuds spot on. The freshly-baked buttermilk biscuits smothered in gravy was a delight to eat. It was soft and crumbly and a bit salty. The gravy was flavorful on its own. Add the saltiness of the sausage and beef bacon to it and it’s a winning combination! Yummy!
Another gravy dish that I love is the Chicken Skillet. It’s filled with seasoned skinned potatoes, green peppers, mushrooms, onions, and melted cheese topped with fried chicken pieces. It’s an amalgamation of wondeful flavors and textures! I can’t believe I used amalgamation to describe food haha! What a complex word! But it’s true, this skillet is one of my favorites dishes in Buffalo’s and that’s saying a lot considering they have a lot of savory selections from Eggs Benedict, Huevos Rancheros, Steak & Eggs, and Burritos.
Did you know that they even have Corned Beef Hash? For us Filipinos, this is a welcome treat because we grew up eating corned beef in the Philippines for breakfast. Seeing it in a hash form doesn’t take away the lovely memories that this brings to me. The only thing missing in this plate is the fried rice, haha. And take note, they’re using a Philippine brand for their corned beef. Ooooh, that’s why it’s flavorful; a bit salty but combined with the boiled egg, it’s awesome!
During weekend mornings, you’ll notice how Buffalo’s is filled with people up for some power food. The energy in the place with mostly brown wooden interiors is palpable. Families are eating together; kids are up and about playing or stuffing their tummies silly with the Funny Face! The conversations and laughter are contagious!
Breakfast is a universal concept that doesn’t grow old, doesn’t get cloying over time. Truly, there’s nothing like pancakes, omelets, and waffles to kick a morning up! But there’s nothing like breakfast food eaten during non-breakfast hours. Imagine reseting a stressful day with good ‘ol breakfast after work! Awesome yes? Cravings are satisfied at Buffalo’s any time! Their steaks, ribs, and burgers aren’t taken out of the limelight though because they are all available for breakfast too! Basically every thing in their menu is available from their opening time to closing time! And they’re affordable! So how’s that for variety?
Buffalo’s Cafe has a branch in the food court of Kingdom Tower. The menu there is not as extensive as the one in Tahlia Street but the bestsellers are available there. The Pink Tarha ladies usually order their wings and we order extra sauces from their many choices. Oh, we did try the Death Valley sauce. It’s only their spiciest and whew, it burnt our tastebuds and made us sweat. So we’re warning you. If you want to try the Death Valley, do it after you’ve eaten the rest of your order. Otherwise, you won’t experience the gastronomic delights that Buffalo’s offers.
