On my 32nd birthday (yes, I’m this old! haha!), I received a very special and beautiful gift from Anna’s Princess Cakery… a cake with beautifully-scuplted flowers on top and cupcakes with the same delicate decoration, only smaller. They’re all too beautiful too eat that I spent a good time of the day just staring at it. As a matter of fact, I didn’t touch the cake until the following day because I just have to make these perfections last.
But before we talk about the cake and the flowers, let’s talk about Anna Freudenthal, the lovely Swedish owner of Anna’s Princess Cakery. She came to Riyadh a few months ago. I’ve been following her Instagram account ever since I saw her like a few photos in The Pink Tarha’s Instagram account. I was smitten by how beautiful her designs are whether it be in the cakes she bakes or the cookies that look oh-so-heavenly! Anna’s works are so creative and they look so professional. She should own her own bakeshop, seriously, and give the commercial bakeshops here in Riyadh a run for their money! She has a Pâtisserie Diploma from the Le Cordon Bleu London and a diploma in Tiered Wedding Cakes from Peggy Porschen Academy in London. Her background in creative arts and art history shows in her creations. Her attention to details is impeccable! Visit her website, Instagram, and Facebook and you’ll spend minutes there just staring and ogling at her work! (Links below.) She has since taken her craft to new levels. It’s a good thing she landed in Riyadh (thanks to her husband who’s here for work).
My cake is heavy. HEAVY! It’s packed to the brim with luscious chocolate buttercream, sweet fondant, soft chocolate cake and tart raspberries. I didn’t want to slice and eat this because of the flowers on top but good thing, they can be preserved. I carefully removed them from the cake and placed them in a huge glass container with a seal. This reminds me of my grandmother who used to take the icing flowers in our cakes and put them in empty and washed bottles of mayonnaise and place them in our shelves at home for decoration. They last for a long, long time. The flowers on my Princess Cakery cake is now in my table where I do product shots and flat lays.
The cake is a great combination of textures and flavors. The chocolate and buttercream are not that cloying and when it got to that point, the sour raspberries cut into the sweetness to give a balance of flavor. The cake is moist and soft and delicious. And it’s really huge that it’s great for sharing; truly perfect for a special occasion to distribute slices of them to families and friends.
The cupcakes are again perfect in their decoration. They have cute flowers on top with gold leaves. I couldn’t preserve these smaller flowers but they were fun to look at. Even my husband was mesmerized by how on point these cupcakes are. The flavor of this is Vanilla Apple Pie with Vanilla Buttercream. Even that is new to me. It’s such an intriguing flavor especially the “apple pie” part. It’s my first time to have apple pie on a cupcake! The cupcake itself is a bit dry but when I reached the center, I can definitely taste the apple pieces in there complete with a hint of cinnamon. They just blend together nicely.
Anna is currently operating her baking business at home. She also makes the popular glass cakes which are iced so smoothly then can act like mirrors. Apart from cakes and cupcakes, she does nice iced cookies too in any design you want. They’re good for event giveaways (or for yourself only, haha). She’s very responsive and accommodating in her Instagram and Facebook accounts so don’t be afraid to ask. Order from Anna’s Princess Cakery on your next event and you won’t be disappointed.
