Silk Road Theme Night at Al Orjouan

The buffets are making a comeback in the city and the luxurious Al Orjouan Restaurant of The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Riyadh had launched their Silk Road Theme Night last week. Inspired by the ancient trade route called the “Silk Road” which originated from China and extended all across the West, the restaurant aims to cover the cuisines from Mongolia, India, China, Egypt, Syria, Greece and Italy.

At the entrance, a dragon statue welcomes the guests along with a map made of chocolate art depicting the route of the Silk Road across the continents. A small kiosk on the side offers their signature drinks which is expected to change every week. That evening, they listed Bubble Tea, Passion Fruit Cream Soda and Ayran as their selections. Of course, they had us at “Bubble Tea”! Although it was served in its local plastic container, the flavors delivered, especially on how well-cooked the tapioca pearls were. Side note: this is included in the buffet so you can have as much Bubble Tea as you want! ^_^

The carousel of food were divided into sections: Salads, Sushi, Live Cooking Stations for the Chinese food, Indian, Italian, Middle Eastern, and of course the Desserts. We tried the Mongolian Spicy beef Salad and Fresh Papaya Salad for our something different – although the staple greens and cold appetizers were also present, along with a variety of seafood cocktails. The Sushi section was bright with fresh salmon and tuna nigiris and countless maki rolls.

My favorite was the Indian food selection, particularly the dainty yet tasty Pani Puri. There were several sauces to choose from but I enjoyed the sweet and sour one the most. They had the beloved dal, chicken biryani, masalas, and nan bread too. For the Middle Eastern dishes there were lamb, mujaddara rice, and kebabs. For more of the Asian flavors, there was the live cooking station for Mongolian Fried Rice and Chow Mien Noodles.

Of course, desserts are always a delight. From fresh fruits, to pastries, to ice cream!

Honestly, it’s been a long time since I’ve been back at The Ritz, and being there that evening was so nostalgic that it brought back good memories, especially of pre-pandemic times. Their lavish interiors still has its classic, royal appeal and the service was courteous and attentive. For your next special occasion, Al Orjouan will surely deliver on a memorable Ritz-Carlton experience.
